Light, Multitool and Compass

Security Items

A good multitool, compass, a light in the form of a headlamp or flashlight, pepper spray, insect repellant, and a first aid kit are necessary items for your bag. All of these can be used in a survival situation even if you are with your vehicle.

Vehicle-Specific Items

You’ll also want to have items in your car that will make being in the car easier and safer when driving.

Ice Scraper. This is a good tool to have if you’ll be traveling in areas with ice and snow during the winter so you can keep your windshield clear. Think about where you live and where you will be traveling, then pack your vehicle according to those environments.

Shovel, Snow Chains, Salt and Cat Litter. If your car wheels are stuck in snow or mud, these items will help you dig out and add enough traction to your tires to keep moving.

Help/Emergency Sign. Make sure this sign is made of reflective material. Even a reflective triangle stored in a cylindrical tube can help notify passersby that you need assistance. An emergency sign can also be used on the road or on the roof of your car to signal for help. Aircraft will be able to see a brightly colored emergency sign on the roof of the car. If you put the sign on the roof, create as much contrast between the roof and sign as possible.

Road Flares. Flares not only signal and warn other drivers of upcoming danger, but you can also use them to start a fire and signal for help. The smoke and light generated by a flare can be seen and spotted from long distances.
